    Preferences for Consistency

    This paper studies how a preference for consistency can affect economic decision-making. We propose a two-period model where people have a preference for consistency because consistent behavior allows them to signal personal and intellectual strength. We then present three experiments that study main predictions and implications of the model. The first is a simple principal-agent experiment that shows that consistency is valued by others and that this value is anticipated. The second experiment underlines the crucial role of early commitment for consistency preferences.     A Mixed Action Analysis of η\eta and η′\eta' Mesons

    We study η\eta and η′\eta' mesons and their mixing angle in a mixed action approach with so-called Osterwalder-Seiler valence quarks on a Wilson twisted mass sea. The gauge configurations have been generated by ETMC for Nf=2+1+1N_f=2+1+1 dynamical quark flavours and for three values of the lattice spacing. The main results are that differences in between the mixed action and the unitary approach vanish towards the continuum limit with the expected rate of O(a2)\mathcal{O}(a^2). The individual size of the lattice artifacts depends, however, strongly on the observable used to match unitary and valence actions. Moreover, we show that for the η\eta mass valence and valence plus sea quark mass dependence differ significantly. Hence, in this case a re-tuning of the simulation parameters in the valence sector only is not sufficient to compensate for mismatches in the original quark masses.Comment: 30 pages, 8 figures, version accepted for publicatio

    Comparison of different lattice definitions of the topological charge

    We present a comparison of different definitions of the topological charge on the lattice, using a small-volume ensemble with 2 flavours of dynamical twisted mass fermions. The investigated definitions are: index of the overlap Dirac operator, spectral projectors, spectral flow of the Hermitian Wilson-Dirac operator and field theoretic with different kinds of smoothing of gauge fields (HYP and APE smearings, gradient flow, cooling).     The IZA Evaluation Dataset: Towards Evidence-Based Labor Policy-Making

    The evaluation of labor market policies has become an important issue in many European countries. In recent years, a number of them have opened their administrative databases for evaluation studies. The advantages of administrative data are straightforward: they are accurate, contain a large number of observations (in some cases the whole population) and usually cover a long period of time. However, the information contained in administrative data is normally limited to administrative purposes. Therefore, information that might be relevant for economic modeling is often absent. The IZA Evaluation Dataset aims to overcome such limitations for Germany by complementing administrative data from the Federal Employment Agency with innovative survey data. The administrative part of the dataset consists of a large random sample of inflows into unemployment in Germany from 2001 to 2008 and contains around 920,000 individuals. The complementary survey covers a panel of more than 17,000 individuals who entered unemployment between June 2007 and May 2008. They were initially interviewed shortly after becoming unemployed and then again one year later. In addition, a quarter of individuals were interviewed already after six months. The survey data also contain information on search behavior, ethnic and social networks, psychological factors, (non-)cognitive abilities, and attitudes.     Dealing with Imperfection Sensitivity of Composite Structures Prone to Buckling

    The Space industry demands for lighter and cheaper launcher transport systems. Structural weight reduction by exploitation of structural reserves in composite launcher structures contributes to this aim, however, it requires accurate, fast and experimentally validated stability analysis of real structures under realistic loading conditions. Structures in space applications can be imperfection sensitive because their maximum load is often equal or close to the first buckling load. The current design guidelines were developed only for metallic structures and are from 1968. For composites structures no appropriate guidelines exist. To fill this gap DLR developed a promising “Single Perturbation Load Approach” which exploits the worst imperfections idea efficiently. In the running EU project DESICOS (New Robust DESIgn Guideline for Imperfection Sensitive COmposite Launcher Structures) this approach will be further investigated and combined with a stochastic approach resulting in a future design approach. This chapter deals with the state-of-the-art in buckling of imperfection sensitive composite structures, recent investigations on the new design approach, and the DESICOS project. It describes the line of actions of the new design approach, and specifies the theoretical and experimental work to be carried out
